Transform Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers

Every day your teeth undergo a significant amount of wear and tear. Cracks, chips, discoloration, and other cosmetic flaws are almost bound to happen over time. The good news is that there is a simple cosmetic dental therapy that can address a wide range of flaws that mar the appearance of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over the surface of your teeth to hide virtually any imperfection. Dr. Gerald Grossman in Westbury, NY, works with world-renowned ceramists to craft customized high-quality porcelain veneers that look and feel incredibly natural.

Candidacy for Porcelain Veneers

The majority of patients with cosmetic flaws affecting one or more teeth are suitable candidates for veneers. If you are suffering from dental conditions like periodontal disease or dental infection, these issues will need to be addressed before you can receive any cosmetic services. Patients with any of the following aesthetic concerns may benefit from receiving porcelain veneers:

  • Misaligned or angled teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped teeth
  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Placing Porcelain Veneers

Your porcelain veneers treatment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Grossman. At this time, he will review your oral health, assess your smile, and discuss your treatment expectations. Together, you and the doctor will develop a treatment plan, or it may be determined that you are better suited for another cosmetic dental treatment. Patients who would prefer a more economic option that still achieve the same effects as veneers may wish to consider the benefits of dental bonding.

Dr. Grossman works with world-renowned ceramists to craft customized high-quality porcelain veneers that look and feel incredibly natural.

During your veneer placement session, Dr. Grossman will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel from the surface of each treated tooth. He is extremely conservative in how much he removes, only removing enough to create sufficient space for the veneers. Impressions will then be taken of these teeth using a digital dental scanner, eliminating the need for messy, traditional impressions. This information will be forwarded to a ceramicist of outstanding reputation at the dental laboratory that will custom-craft your veneers.

Approximately two weeks later, you can return to our office to have your veneers placed. Your teeth will be cleaned and lightly buffed to optimize the bonding process. To ensure that your veneers blend in with your bite and smile, Dr. Grossman will double check the shape, shade, and fit. Finally, the veneers will be placed over your teeth, and bonded in place with dental cement.

To make room for the veneers, your doctor will remove a conservative amount of enamel from the front of your teeth.

Maintaining Your Porcelain Veneers

Dental-grade porcelain can withstand excessive pressure, but veneers may crack or weaken. To maximize the lifespan of your veneers, patients are encouraged to avoid certain activities like biting their fingernails or chewing ice. Patients suffering from chronic teeth grinding can protect their veneers by using a night guard.

You can also extend the longevity of your veneers by maintaining good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing daily and seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and exams can prevent cavities from developing beneath veneers. If this occurs, your veneers will need to be removed before a filling can be placed.
